VMware and Oracle separately announced new offerings aimed at helping more customers migrate their applications to the cloud.
For its part, VMware launched VMware Cloud, aimed at the trend of organization cloud architectures becoming more distributed and multi-cloud in nature. The offering includes Cloud Universal, a flexible subscription plan that simplifies the purchase and consumption of VMware multi-cloud infrastructure and management services. This should appeal to companies wanting a more operational expense-based cloud consumption model, and those with varied bursting requirements and varied schedules for bringing different applications to the cloud, the company said.
The company also unveiled VMware Cloud Console, a solution for monitoring and managing VMware Cloud infrastructure in a single tool regardless of where it’s deployed. The console also allows customers to redeem credits, provision deployments of VMware Cloud Universal eligible offerings, and access VMware support.
Cloud Universal also includes VMware App Navigator, which can assess and prioritize app transformation initiatives across an entire application estate based on the value of each app, the company said. It leverages a combination of automated capabilities and assessment help from VMware practitioners.
These tools make VMware Cloud a platform that can help companies boost “developer productivity by enabling them to build and deploy to any cloud,” the company said in a press release, adding, “The platform enables IT to modernize infrastructure and operations with better economics and less risk.”
This announcement comes just two weeks after VMware announced a bundle of features to support multi-cloud environments.
Meanwhile, Oracle announced in a press release the launch of Oracle Cloud Lift Services, a package of free resources aimed at getting more existing and new Oracle customers to migrate workloads to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), and do so more quickly.
Oracle was seen early on as being a bit behind other technology giants, such as Amazon Web Services, Google and Microsoft, in migrating existing corporate customers to cloud-based services. However, the company has made strides over the last two years with its cloud infrastructure strategy, including hiring thousands of employees to support its cloud initiatives.
The company said Oracle Cloud Lift Services gives customers access to Oracle cloud engineers and premier technical services, including engineering resources for activities ranging from performance analysis, application architecture, hands-on migrations and go-live support.

Several enterprise customers already have been using the services to accelerate their cloud migrations, such as professional soccer organization Seattle Sounders FC. Ravi Ramineni, vice president, Soccer Analytics and Research, Seattle Sounders FC, said in Oracle’s press release, “We’ve been working very closely with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure to overhaul our data systems to enable us to build next-generation analytics tools. This keeps us ahead of the competition on and off the field. With Oracle Cloud Lift Services, we’re able to accelerate our migration to the cloud, providing us with valuable hands-on expertise from Oracle’s Cloud Engineering team.”
