iniVation wins Best of Sensors 2022 for its Dynamic Vision Sensor

At Sensors Converge 2022, the most innovative people, companies, and products in the industry were given Best of Sensors Awards. Finalists from each of 14 categories were selected by a panel of industry experts. Winning in the Aerospace/Space category was iniVation for its Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS).

Compared to conventional cameras, a Dynamic Vision Sensor works differently. While conventional cameras capture images to be processed frame by frame to detect changes, a DVS looks for image changes at the local level — down to the pixel. The sensor only generates an output when it detects a brightness change in any pixel, much like how humans can detect movements outside of their focal vision. This allows a DVS to capture the changes and movements of millions of events per second. The result is a sensor that provides high-quality images with low latency and at low power.

The iniVation DVS also offers a high dynamic range of over 120 dB, meaning it’s able to detect more colors and generate an image that’s closer to what a human eye would see, such as detailed shadows that might just appear black with a conventional camera.

The DVS is perfect for any use case where low-power or high-speed detection (or both) are important. For example, industrial Internet of Things (IoT) devices can benefit from the DVS’s low-power requirements, reducing maintenance and downtime for surveillance and smart-city applications. The sensor’s high-speed detection capabilities make it ideal for autonomous vehicle and drone applications as well as automated driver assistance systems (ADAS). With low latency, iniVation DVS can be used in robotics and industrial vision for high-speed production inspection and human motion analysis.

Powering the DVS is iniVation’s patented neuromorphic technology that brings human-eye accuracy to the company’s product line, which also includes laser scanners and eye-tracking devices.

On the software side, open-source iniVation DV software offers the world’s most advanced event-based framework. It doesn’t require any programming experience and can run on Windows, Mac, and Linux. The included component library offers out-of-the-box solutions for most use cases, and it’s possible to interface with Python, C++, and ROS.

While the DV base software enables fast and easy deployment of advanced vision processing algorithms, anyone with a DVS can tailor the software to their individual use case. iniVation can also provide custom hardware and software solutions to help manufacturers work against the limits of conventional vision.

iniVation specializes in bio-inspired intelligent technology that offers unprecedented advantages over conventional vision. Founded by the inventors of event-based vision, the company brings together world-class research and development experts with decades of experience. iniVation has global partners and customers, including top-10 companies in automotive, consumer electronics, and aerospace. iniVation’s current CEO, Kynan Eng, has raised over $20 million in research and venture funding and helped send the first neuromorphic technology into space.
