Wireless Sensor Network Markets: IoT Markets Are Blazing with 450 Million WSN Chipset Sales in 2015

With annual chipset volumes reaching 450 million in 2015, wireless sensor network (WSN) markets are experiencing hyper-growth.

Several forces are driving this including plummeting component costs, open source software, developer platform advancements, maturing standards, multi-protocol chips and gateways, ubiquitous mesh networking, IP addressability and dozens of WSN chip vendors. Wireless Internet of Things (IoT) product creation cycles have accelerated from years to months.

Two WSN landscapes-- fixed and mobile-- continue to overlap and converge. By 2020, 5 billion WSN devices will be at work in tens of thousands of industrial, commercial, residential and consumer applications. At this time, fixed WSNs will make up three-quarters of the unit shipments. However, mobile WSN systems will make up 43% of the revenues.

Within the next few years, billions of cloud-connected wireless smart objects (sensors and actuators) will create a more sentient, safer and smarter world. IoT applications for the smart home have become the focal point where mobile sensing devices, wearables, smart lighting and other smart home solutions increasingly intersect.

Standards for IP addressable smart objects is a growing consideration. One of the fastest growing initiatives is the IP-based wireless mesh Thread specification that was recently released to over 160 members of the Thread Group. Others include Bluetooth 4.2 with support for IPv6 and Bluetooth Smart Mesh, sub GHz IEEE 802.11ah along with ISA100.11a and the Wi-SUN Alliance.

ON World has conducted ongoing research on WSN and IoT markets since 2002 and this report is based on input from 2,500 individuals with executives across the whole global WSN value chain. It provides in-depth analysis of the market and competitive forces for 50 WSN market segments with 5-year forecasts by device, application, chipset and technology with revenues for equipment, services and RF modules/chipsets.
