Intel’s Arc GPUs see slower release curve, company says

For faster gaming laptops and desktops, Intel has been promising Arc GPUs in competition with chips and cards from AMD and Nvidia.

However, Intel admitted some delays in rolling out Arc-capable laptops in a blog post late Monday, just prior to the opening of its Vision 2022 event.

“We planned to have broader OEM availability at this point; however, we have had some software readiness delays and, together with Covid lockdowns impacting global supply chains, OEM designs are only this month becoming more widely available,” said Lisa Pearce, vice president and general manager for the Visual Computer Group.

Laptops with Arc 5 and Arc 7 graphics will be available in “early summer,” she said, noting Intel is working with PC partners Samsung, Lenovo, Acer, HP and Asus to get the computers with Arc 3 GPUs into the market “ASAP.”

Arc GPUs in desktop computers have won some praise already and will appear first in China, Pearce said. Nvidia unveiled a new Hopper line of GPUs in March. AMD has just announced three Radeon RX 6000 Series graphics cards.
