Fierce Innovation Awards: Telecom Edition announces winners, California Eastern Laboratories receives top recognition

SANTA CLARA, CA -- Fierce Innovation Awards: Telecom Edition, a unique operator-reviewed awards program from the publishers of FierceWireless, FierceTelecom, and FierceCable. CEL received top honors in the category of Last Mile/Edge/Access for its innovative, industry leading MeshWorks™ platform, a true turnkey solution enabling fast development and deployment of wireless sensors and control networks within the M2M space.

Jason Nelson, Publisher of FierceWireless, FierceTelecom, and FierceCable, says, "As the Innovation Awards program grows each year so does the level of innovation we see from our entrants. To that end, we are thrilled to be able to offer applicants a unique channel to share their products and services with such an esteemed panel of judges from major global operators."

Winners were selected by an exclusive carrier-only panel of executives from AT&T, CableLabs, Cablevision System Corporation, Comcast, Cox Communications, Inc., Orange, Sprint, TeliaSonera International Carrier, and Verizon. Full profiles of the judges can be found at https://www.fierceinnovationawards.com/telecom/2014/judges.

Judges evaluated submissions based on the following criteria: technology innovation, financial impact, market validation and end-user customer experience.

CEL's MeshWorks platform excelled in each of these criteria within the Last Mile/Edge/Access category where cost management, power consumption minimization, size containment, and ease of cloud access are all critical for M2M applications. Overcoming these hurdles can be problematic, especially for modestly sized M2M deployments which may lack the necessary scale or engineering resources to achieve viable IoT solutions. MeshWorks™ is designed to address these implementation challenges by providing three key functions.

First, MeshWorks serves as the last sub-mile link for sensor networks, employing a wireless mesh PAN (personal area network) powered by CEL's 2.4GHz 802.15.4 radio modules. Since MeshWorks™ utilizes the 802.15.4 radio standard, power consumption, cost and size targets are easily met when linking multiple sensor and control nodes together. The PAN's sensor and control data is then aggregated together into a single gateway before being sent to the cloud via a cellular or Ethernet link.

MeshWorks is also a programming tool that eliminates the complexity associated with writing embedded firmware. Coding the 802.15.4 radios no longer requires expertise in C or fluency in complex mesh networking protocols like ZigBee or Z-Wave. The GUI-driven MeshWorks™ software suite utilizes simple python scripting (a basic language being widely taught in both universities and high schools alike). The MeshWorks™ suite even includes a novel script generation tool called the 'ScriptNinja™'. This tool walks the user through the creation of a simple script using step-by-step, easy-to-understand dialogs. With the advent of this new tool, programming tasks that would normally take months of embedded firmware training can be now be tackled by novices in a matter of minutes.

Finally, MeshWorks™ is a complete end-to-end platform that provides instant 'out-of-the-box' cloud access with complete portal tools and customizable dashboards. When combined with CEL's OpenTether Sensor Nodes, users can be up and running with cloud-connected sensor prototypes in mere hours vs. months. Each node combines 10 sensor functions, including temperature and humidity sensing, proximity detection, light sensing, open/close detection, asset movement monitoring, rotation detection, drop/shock detection, and compass orientation. The Sensor Node also includes an I/O sensor expansion port, allowing users to connect virtually any generic sensor type to the wireless network via its I2C, analog, or digital I/O.
