The Emerald GP500C from GreenPeak Technologies, Utrecht, The Netherlands, is an IEEE 802.15.4-compliant communications controller chip for ultra low power wireless sensor networks. The controller incorporates a transceiver with a fully integrated communications layer and an onchip energy manager and can drive and control the data communication rather than being driven by a microcontroller. Peak current draw is ~20 mA and its system sleep mode is <100 nA, enabling wireless end nodes to run on energy harvesting devices. Features include embedded hardware-based antenna diversity to reduce dead spots, 30–50 m indoor range, and link reliability features. The controller is supplied with a reference design and development kit and supports a range of software stacks that can run on different processors. (In the U.S.: 512-464-1188)
