The KMA36 from Measurement Specialties Inc., Hampton, VA, is a universal magnetic encoder SoC that combines a magnetoresistive sensor array with an ADC and signal processing. The AMR-based contactless sensor measures the magnetic field angle of an external magnet over a 360° rotation as well as incremental positions along a linear magnetic pole strip with a 5 mm pole length. Software includes a self-diagnostic sequence at power on to test the circuit before it is integrated into the assembly; it also performs monitoring functions to signal faults and failures to the system that it interfaces with. Applications include position measurement in harsh industrial, engine, and vehicle environments; control of handling machines; machine tools; robotics; and motor motion.
