The SX8733 from Semtech Corp., Camarillo, CA, is a 3 by 3 mm device that combines an integrated temperature sensor with monitoring electronics to connect up to 2 temperature diodes. The device can be used to monitor one or two application processor ASICs in addition to its own temperature. The device drives the sensing diodes with a variable current and converts that into temperature information. It reads sequentially up to 2 external sensors and its internal sensor; the external sensors can be discrete diodes or transistors for devices such as hard drives or temperature diodes embedded in VLSI ASICs. The temperature monitor can be addressed through the SMBus protocol.
