Freescale Semiconductor, Austin, TX, offers the MMA8450Q accelerometer designed for smart mobile devices. The 3 by 3 by 1 mm sensor features 12-bit digital resolution and offers an internal FIFO 32-samples/axis memory buffer to improve overall system power savings and response time by offloading functions from the host processor. Features include ±2 g, ±4 g, ±8 g triaxial accelerometer with I2C; 12-bit digital output; and current consumption of 2 µA in off mode, 10 µA max. in standby, and 27–120 µA (low-power mode) and 42–250 (normal mode) in active mode; 2 programmable interrupt pins; 1.71–1.89 V operation; and embedded functions. Embedded functions include 4 channels of motion detection (freefall or motion, pulse, or transient), orientation detection, automatic output data rate change for auto wake-up and return-to-sleep, and self test. Development kits are available.
