The adidas 1 Basketball, Adidas's newest "intelligent shoe," works on the same principles as the adidas 1 Running shoe, but it's been uploaded with new software and changed physically for the sport. For instance, a magnetic sensor in the heel detects compression levels and sends these data to a microprocessor that determines if the cushioning level is too soft or too firm. Then, a motor-driven cable system adjusts to make the shoe softer or firmer as needed. The shoe recognizes different kinds of compression associated with different actions on the court. It filters the data and develops a player profile, then adjusts more quickly when the player goes from running to cutting, or from jumping to running. The shoe will begin selling in May for $250.
