Sensors Announces 2012 Expo & Conference

NEWTON, MA /Marketwire/ -- The 2012 Sensors Expo & Conference will bring together over 4000 engineers, scientists, and industry professionals from around the world to see the latest innovations in sensor technology, learn about the most important sensing trends, and network with industry leaders. The Donald E. Stephens Convention Center will be hosting the conference again this year in Rosemont, IL, June 6–7, 2012. Highlights of the event include a MEMS Pavilion, featuring a MEMS Innovation Area; Energy Harvesting Pavilion; Wireless Pavilion; Big Data & Cloud Pavilion; Technology Update Theater; the Best of Sensors Expo Awards, presented by Sensors magazine, and much more.

The Pre-Conference Symposia will be held Tuesday, June 5, from 9 am to 5 pm. Topics will include:

  • MEMS in the Mainstream: Commercialization and Product Realization—Leveraging the MEMS Infrastructure, led by Session Chairman and Organizer Karen Lightman, Managing Director, MEMS Industry Group (MIG). Organized and hosted by MIG, the leading trade association advancing MEMS across global markets, this pre-conference symposium will explore the many models of achieving MEMS commercialization and product realization. System-level customers attending this pre-conference will learn how to leverage a mature MEMS infrastructure capable of delivering system-level components without the cost, development time, or performance risks of years past. Speakers will discuss how MEMS fabrication has evolved, creating a new era of in-house fabrication, as well as fabless and fab-lite manufacturing. Presentations will include different perspectives on how companies have incorporated MEMS solutions into their current product line while using their existing infrastructure. They will also address the product development challenges and the market-pull vs. technology-push issues unique to MEMS. In other words, MEMS is in the mainstream.
  • Energy Harvesting for Powering Sensors Tutorials led by Session Organizer Randy Frank, President, Randy Frank & Associates Ltd. Presenters in this symposium will provide an in-depth analysis of the challenges and solutions of using energy harvesting techniques of varying types for powering sensors. In addition to exploring the energy harvesting technologies, other system aspects will be addressed, including high-efficiency, low-power microcontrollers, wireless connectivity, and power management. By explaining the design-in requirements for existing energy harvesting products in real-world applications, attendees will have new tools to consider in the design of next-generation sensor systems.

Over fifty sessions will be offered during the two day conference, broken down into nine tracks on the following topics: MEMS, energy harvesting, wireless sensing solutions, sensor and system design, novel approaches to measurement and detection, big data and analytics, mobile sensing, applied sensors, and RFID/M2M. Engineers and executives planning to attend the Sensors Expo & Conference will have the opportunity to hear from Assaf Biderman, who is currently teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is the Associate Director of SENSEable City Laboratory, a research group that explores the "real-time city" by studying the increasing deployment of sensors and networked hand-held electronics, as well as their relationship to the built environment. Biderman will deliver the keynote presentation "A Human-Computer-City Interface" on Wednesday, June 6, at 9 am.

In this keynote, Assaf Biderman will present a view of the role sensors and other data-capturing methods can play in making new connections between people and the built environment as a way to address some of today's more pressing urban challenges. The presentation will focus on how cities are facing unparalleled opportunities now that distributed digital technologies like sensing, microprocessors, and network connectivity are becoming an integral part of the built environment. This new condition allows individuals to monitor the city and make smarter decisions as they move around, consume, and interact with the urban environment. We can view this as a new type of human-computer-city interface, through which individuals and organizations can create and connect with new urban services, and which opens multiple avenues for innovation to make its way into our cities. With the global move toward urbanization, and given the challenges that cities face—environmental impact, energy consumption, transportation—such opportunities have become particularly relevant.

The Expo Hall, featuring hundreds of leading vendors showcasing the latest sensing technologies and systems, will be open on Wednesday, June 6, from 10 am to 5 pm and on Thursday, June 7, from 10 am to 3 pm. Conference sessions will run from 10 am to 4 pm both days, with keynote presentations starting at 9 am. The event will take place at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, 5555 N.
