TEL AVIV, Israel /PRNewswire/ -- OpenNI, an industry-led organization formed to certify and promote the compatibility and interoperability of natural interaction (NI) devices, applications, and middleware, and Point Cloud Library (PCL), the largest open source community for 3D processing, announced a new cooperation to promote OpenNI as the standard for 3D sensing acquisition and development to bring computer vision solutions to the 3D sensing developer community.
The partnership intends to enable new 3D sensing solutions by creating a platform for developers to build 3D sensing applications across all sectors of technology industries. OpenNI and PCL will also work together through an innovative partnership that will focus on the joint development of crowd-sourced open-source computer vision modules.

The open source computer vision modules will use the OpenNI-compliant depth maps as input. The program will be run by Open Perception, the maintainers of PCL.
The OpenNI standard enables seamless adaptation to hand and full-body tracking, scene segmentation, volume estimation, object recognition, resulting in incredible machine vision and cutting-edge interfaces in industries such as robotics, living room, digital signage, industrial, medical, retail, security, and many more.
OpenNI is the largest 3D sensing development framework and community. The open source SDK is the "recognized standard for developing computer vision middleware and 3D solutions." The OpenNI community provides developers with a full range of software tools along with a vivid ecosystem platform for effective collaboration and promotion.

Point Cloud Library (PCL) is a standalone, large-scale, open project for 2D/3D image and point cloud processing and is currently maintained by Open Perception, a non-profit organization in California. PCL's open-source framework, including numerous state-of-the art algorithms for point clouds and 3D geometry processing, such as filtering, feature estimation, surface reconstruction, registration, model fitting, and segmentation.
