The TMP006 from Texas Instruments (TI) Inc., Dallas, TX, is a single-chip passive IR MEMS temperature sensor that can be used to accurately measure the case temperature in devices such as smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. The 1.6 by 1.6 mm device integrates an onchip MEMS thermopile sensor, signal conditioning, a 16-bit ADC, a local temperature sensor, and voltage references; has I2 and SMBus digital interfaces; and provides a complete digital system for contactless temperature measurement that is 95% smaller than any other thermopile sensor. Power consumption is 240 µA (quiescent) and 1 µA in shutdown mode; temperature range is –40°C to 125°C with ±0.5°C accuracy (typ.) on the local sensor and ±1°C on the passive IR sensor.
