Contained in a 3 by 3 by 0.9 mm package, the MMA7660FC triaxial MEMS accelerometer from Freescale Semiconductor, Austin, TX, is engineered for use in handheld portable electronic devices and provides orientation and shake and tap detection, with auto wake-up/sleep detection. Communication with the main system processor is through an I2C interface. Features include ±1.5 g range; 0.4 µA current draw in off mode, 2 µA in standby mode, and 47 µA at 1 sps; configurable output data rate (1–120 sps); ability to survive shocks up to 10,000 g; and configurable auto wake/sleep and orientation detection. An evaluation kit is available.
