TEL AVIV, Israel /BUSINESS WIRE/ -- LifeBEAM, a developer of advanced physiological sensors, unveiled an Indiegogo campaign for its first consumer facing product—a smart bicycle helmet, with built-in heart rate sensor. The company has teamed up with leading helmet maker Lazer Sports to provide cyclists with a comfortable and hassle-free heart rate sensor that works with most leading monitoring devices, fitness watches, and smartphones.
LifeBEAM, a startup with experience in the aerospace domain, has designed a unique sensing technology that uses infrared rays to detect heart rate data and other important physiological indicators from different body locations. The technology is currently being deployed in several test trials for fighter pilots, and the company has also participated in NASA's R&D activity to explore the use of its sensors in future space missions.
Now, the company is embarking on the first consumer application for its sensing technology—a cycling helmet with built-in heart rate sensor. The startup is turning to Indiegogo to help raise the necessary funds for the first production run of the helmet, and to find the first buyers for this innovative system. LifeBEAM has partnered with leading bicycle manufacture Lazer Sports to integrate LifeBEAM in one of its popular helmets—the Genesis.
Currently, there are limited options to obtain accurate heart rate data. Almost all of these involve a relatively inconvenient chest strap that monitors EKG data. LifeBEAM's sensor has been built-in to the Lazer Sports helmet and will be completely invisible to the user. The sensor uses ANT+ and Bluetooth 4.0 to send heart data to leading devices such as Garmin heart rate monitors and almost any type of smartphone app.
