Melexis Microelectronic Integrated Systems, Concord, NH, offers the MLX90614 family of IR thermometers in a TO-can package. The device combines an automotive-grade silicon chip with a thin micromachined membrane and onchip thermocouples, custom-built signal conditioning, and EEPROM for factory-set calibration parameters. The digital-output sensor is fully linearized and compensated for ambient temperature and transmits the result over an SMBus or by a continuous PWM signal. Operating temperature range is –40°C to 125°C, extended object temperature range is –70°C to 380°C, and temperature resolution is 0.01°C. Applications include noncontact temperature measurement in car air-conditioning, room heaters, medical equipment, and home appliances.
