InvenSense Launches Single-Chip 3-axis Digital Gyroscope

SUNNYVALE,-- InvenSense, Inc., the leading provider of MEMS-based motion processing solutions for consumer electronics, announced the availability of the ITG-3200 3-axis MEMS gyroscope, the world's first integrated gyro with three axes of rotation (pitch, roll, yaw) on a single silicon chip. Until now, meeting the large market opportunity for motion-based gaming and television 3D remote control menu navigation has been stalled because of a lack of affordable gyros and total solution costs. The ITG-3200 uniquely addresses these market needs through innovative system integration and a digital output design while additionally reducing power consumption by over 50% and package size by 67% (4x4x0.9mm QFN) over competing multi-chip solutions. The ITG-3200 is available now and is priced at under $3 per unit in volume.

InvenSense has migrated the patented Nasiri-Fabrication process, which is production hardened with nearly 100 million gyro axis shipped, from 6-inch to 8-inch wafers for increased capacity with lower test and package costs. The ITG-3200 has also migrated to a smaller CMOS process technology node enabling more die per wafer with additional features at lower prices than previous generation InvenSense gyroscopes. The ITG-3200 is tested and calibrated at its subsidiary in Taiwan.

"3D in-air pointing and motion control have been made popular by the leading gaming console companies and are expected to drive new interfaces for a wide range of consumer electronics," said Richard Dixon, senior analyst for MEMS at iSuppli. "The development of consumer MEMS gyroscopes with the requisite 3-axes of detection should open the flood gates to a whole range of new interfaces and propel market growth. InvenSense has led this field and the fact that this highly complex device has taken just five years to come to market with a target price point of under $3 and with a consumer relevant package thickness of less than 1mm is a testament to the company."

The ITG-3200 offers a combination of industry firsts for MEMS gyroscopes. The 3-axis integration eliminates cross axis interference and zero rate offset shift; digital output eliminates external high-resolution ADC; MEMS structure design and smaller process node provides the longest battery life for any 3-axis gyro; and, the smallest package size (4x4x0.9mm) plus improved MEMS proof mass design.

"While other MEMS gyro companies just started to roll out their first generation products, the ITG-3200 represents our third generation solution showcasing the latest innovations and patent-pending MEMS gyros from a proven high volume fabrication platform," said Michael Maia, Vice President, Gaming and 3D User Interface Business Unit at InvenSense. "We have addressed the market demand for affordability, size and performance offering a new solution that will enable a range of applications that simply were not possible before."

The ITG-3200 is designed with three independent MEMS gyro structures on a single substrate to maximize overall performance. It integrates three high-resolution 16-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) enabling fast motion gaming while concurrently supporting precision pointing and cursor control. It offers a simplified system design in a single device, eliminating the need for signal processing and many external components. The ITG-3200 integrates low-pass filters, embedded temperature sensor, and Fast Mode I2C serial interface.

Performance features include a full scale range of up to 2000°/sec for aggressive game play, and low-noise of 0.03°/s/rt.Hz, all while providing the highest level of robustness supporting 10,000 g shock.

The ITG-3200 is available now for sampling to selected qualified customers with mass production in Q1 2010.
