HBM Launches Torque-Speed Measurement Systems

MARLBOROUGH, MA /BUSINESS WIRE/ -- HBM Inc., a leading manufacturer of data acquisition systems, analysis and calibration software, strain gauges, transducers, and sensors, introduces new T40B and T40FM torque transducers that include an integrated speed measurement system.

HBM torque transducers are specifically designed to work in harsh environments, such as those that contain humidity, condensation, dust, oil, and grease. These conditions typically restrict the use of a traditional optical speed measurement system. But because the T40B and T40FM take measurements based on the contactless sensing of an anisotropic magnetoresistive sensor, the transducer signal is more robust and stable than that of an optical system. The transducer integrates both the magnetic technology and the speed measurement sensor, which saves space and makes installation easier.

There are many industry solutions designed solely for measuring rotational speed. The T40 now stands out because its new optional speed measurement sensor lets the device measure both torque and speed (rpm) at the same time. The T40 torque transducer measures speed with a 1024 pulse output, which provides users with far higher resolution than traditional optical systems that provide 60 or 360 pulses.

In addition, because the radial or axial distance between the sensor and the magnetic ring is only 2.5 mm, the rotational speed measuring system has a high tolerance of application-related vibrations.

An optional reference pulse signal is generated by a separate sensor that senses the corresponding magnetic field in the axial direction. The system can thus provide the signals to integrate the rotational speed and the angle of rotation in the control loop of downstream equipment, such as a data acquisition system.

Other important features of the T40B and T40FM include:

  • Torque measuring ranges of up to 80,000 Newton-meters
  • Low measurement uncertainty
  • Good temperature stability
  • Up to 0.03% of full scale linearity and hysteresis combined
  • Standard response times of 1000, 3000, 6000, and 10,000 Hz options

"High resolution and reliability has been achieved with the new T40 speed sensing system," says HBM Application engineer Mark Minda. "The transducer's integration of torque and speed measurement capabilities results in a robust device that frees companies from worrying about testing in harsh conditions and lets them instead focus on making accurate and reliable measurements."
