The AD7147 CapTouch capacitance-to-digital converter from Analog Devices Inc., Norwood, MA, lets designers add user controls such as scroll wheels and touch pads to portable electronic devices. The device offers 13 capacitance inputs, femto farad resolution, integrated active shield technology to protect from capacitance-to-ground pickup and allow the device to be placed away from the main system IC, and an improved response. Onchip sensitivity algorithms compensate for changes in temperature and humidity. Power consumption is 1 mA in full-power mode, 50 µA in low-power mode, and 2 µA shutdown power consumption.
