Libelium, Zaragoza, Spain, offers a Bluetooth module for its Waspmote wireless sensor network (WSN) platform, enabling wireless sensor networks to directly link to portable devices such as smartphones, PDAs, and laptops. When combined with the Meshlium multiprotocol router, the Bluetooth module supports deployment of hybrid ZigBee- and Bluetooth-based WSNs. The Bluetooth module can send sensor data frames to smart phones that support the Serial Port Profile. The Waspmote's internal microprocessor minimizes energy consumption by switching the radio module on and off at the necessary intervals. Waspmote uses an open source API and programming environment.
