Linear Technology Corp., Milpitas, CA, offers the LT5581 broadband 6 GHz RMS detector with 40 dB dynamic range and a 1.4 mA operating supply current. The chip is suited for a range of power monitor and control applications in portable and battery-powered wireless systems; cellular base stations, picocells, and femtocells; and fiber-optic transmitters and instrumentation. The IC outputs a DC voltage that is linearly proportional to the log input power, providing mV/dB scaling with better than ±1 dB linearity across a 40 dB range. RMS measurement capability provides accurate RF power readings to within ±0.2 dB regardless of waveforms that have high crest-factor modulated content, multicarrier or multitone. The single-ended RF input does not require an external RF transformer.
