Communications giant Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd said Tuesday it will leverage its 5G technologies to develop radar for self-driving cars, according to a Reuters report.
During a Beijing conference on intelligent connected vehicles, Xu Zhijun, current holder of the company’s rotating chairmanship, told conference attendees Huawei will build an “ecosystem” of car-equipped sensors. Huawei will utilize its 5G technologies to develop millimeter-wave radar and laser radar, Xu was quoted as saying.
Xu did not release a timeframe for development of the products, the Reuters report said.

Huawei is been making inroads into 5G and in April launched communications hardware for the automotive industry, the report said. The company’s interest in developing millimeter-wave radar and laser radar sensors comes as automotive manufacturers are looking to develop vehicles capable of Level 4, or fully autonomous driving.
The company had previously announced it was working with European and Chinese vehicle makers to launch self-driving cars as soon as 2021.
