Quantum Update: Zapata study, QCI, Strangeworks, Big Ten schools, more

So much has been happening on the quantum technology front in recent days that it would be unwise to try to cram it all into one wrap-up story… but we’re going to try anyway:

…Enterprises appear ready to invest in quantum computing. That’s the bottom line to be taken from a survey commissioned by Zapata Computing that Fierce Electronics wrote about this week. Not only are some enterprises starting to push their quantum computing budgets past the $1 million mark, but also almost three quarters of those surveyed believe enterprises that don’t move to adopt quantum computing will risk falling behind competitively…

...Quantum Computing Inc. (QCI), which was among the first pure-play quantum computing companies to list its shares on Nasdaq, shuffled its top ranks a bit this week, naming William McGann, previously a QCI board member, as its new chief operating and technology officer. Previous CTO Michael Booth was moved to a “senior scientist” role within the company, according to McGann, who commented via email to Fierce Electronics this week. Michael Turmelle also joined QCI’s board of directors. QCI leaders say the company will not be making any changes to its strategy or technology roadmap…

…Quantinuum, the company recently born from the merger of Honeywell Quantum Solutions and Cambridge Quantum, was in the news again this week, partnering with quantum software company Strangeworks to provide its new Quantum Origin cryptographic key offering into the Strangeworks ecosystem (Strangeworks, incidentally, is just about our favorite company name in the whole quantum sector. And if you hear someone call out the name “Whurley” on the event circuit, they’re talking about Strangeworks founder William Hurley…)

…We’re used to seeing Big Ten schools battle one another on the gridiron or the hardwood–and in particular fans of Michigan’s two big universities are not likely to agree on much–but here we have a new collaboration involving the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Purdue University. The school will work together as the Midwest Quantum Collaboratory to study quantum science and technology, drawing together expertise and resources to advance the field…

…EeroQ is opening a 9,600-square-foot quantum computing lab at The Terminal, a new industrial complex in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood…

…PayPal and IBM are working together on applying quantum computing technology to fraud prevention, according to a Business Insider report

Watch for our weekly quantum update reports on future Friday afternoons...
