xMEMS Labs announced on Tuesday a 1mm thin near-field MEMS micro speaker suitable for smart watches, XR glasses and other small, mobile form factors.
Called xMEMS Sycamore, it is a full-range, all-silicon, near-field micro speaker based on the company’s technology that creates full-frequency sound from ultrasonic waves.
“With Sycamore, mobile electronics can now achieve thinner, more stylish form factors while maintaining big, rich sound,” said Mike Housholder, xMEMS vice president of marketing and business development.
It is 67% thinner and 70% lighter than dynamic driver technology, he told Fierce Electronics.
“OEMs are really desperate for something smaller and thinner,” he said. “There’s been demand even with the product in prototype phase.” The Sycamore can come in different aspect ratios, with a longer and thinner aspect for watches and glasses, for example.
With the sound quality of Sycamore, it can also be used in so-called “open fit” ear buds that sit on the ear for comfort instead of being worn inside the ear.
Sycamore will be on public demonstration at CES in January with production in Q4 2025.
