July chip sales edge up, but are still well behind last year

Chipmakers are seeing steady sales growth in 2023, even though monthly tallies are still well behind a year ago.

Sales in July reached $43 billion, up by 2.3% from June, but nearly 12% behind a year ago in July 2022, according to the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization.

“The global semiconductor  market has experienced modest but steady month-to-month growth this year, with sales increasing for fourth consecutive month in July,” said John Neuffer, CEO of the Semiconductor Industry Association, which represents nearly all the US semiconductor industry.

“Global sales remain down compared to last year, but the year-to-year decrease in July was the smallest gap of the year to date,” he added in a statement. And that is a reason for optimism, he added.

Year-to-year sales in July compared to a year earlier dropped in the Americas by 7% and in China by 18%.
