Honeywell offers two new rugged handhelds for retail workers

Honeywell announced on Thursday two new rugged enterprise mobile handheld computers for workers in the retail supply chain including those employed in logistics, warehousing, in-store retail and last-mile delivery.

The new 5-inch display CT45 and CT45XP handhelds rely on the new Qualcomm QCS4290/QCM4290 octa-core processors introduced by the chipmaker in June as part of a family of seven different IoT processors. At the time, Qualcomm said it is working with 18 different devices makers Including Honeywell.

The processor supports a 13-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera and scanning as well as GPS, Bluetooth, WLAN, RFID and wireless WAN, including Wi-Fi 6 in the CT45XP model. Push-to-talk is supported.

Wi-Fi 6 capability will allow delivery workers to access the network outside of the four walls of a building using 4g-LTE, Honeywell said in a spec sheet.

Honeywell said the CT45 will retail for $1,500 but did not announce the price for the CT45XP.  Both models run on Android 11 to 13, with committed support of Android 14 and Android 15 “pending feasibility,” the company said. Honeywell’s Android Service ensures software patch support through 2032.

Memory and storage includes a 6GB DDR4x RAM and, 64 GB UFS in the XP model with a user-accessible microSD card of up to 512 GB.

Both handhelds rely on the Honeywell Mobility Edge platform for long life, security and durability.

Honeywell said COVID-19 accelerated  demands for next-day home delivery of retail goods, click and collect and curbside pickup. “Retailers are investing in technology to implement new consumer shopping options…while asking their employees to work smarter and more efficiently,” said Kevin Dehoff, president of the Honeywell productivity solutions and services business line, in a statement.
