Freescale Semiconductor, Austin, TX, offers its single-package MPXY8300 tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that contains a capacitive pressure sensor, temperature sensor, 8-bit microcontroller with 512 bytes of RAM and 16 KB of Flash memory, 2-axis accelerometer, and RF transmitter. The system can provide real-time tire pressure measurement at each wheel and can be programmed to transmit measurements at certain tire rotation speeds and even when the tires are at rest. The integrated accelerometer provides motion detection. The capacitive pressure sensor, available in ranges of 100–8000 kPa (passenger cars) or 100–1500 kPa (heavy-duty trucks), enables ultra-low power consumption for battery life beyond 10 year requirements.
