Power Pucks from Perpetua Power Source Technologies Inc., Corvallis, OR, use the company's Flexible Thermoelectric Film to convert waste heat into useful electrical output. Internal electronics store and regulate the energy to produce a steady 1.8–3.3 V regulated voltage to power wireless transceivers and sensors. The thermoelectric film uses the Seebeck effect, with an assembly of ultra-thin thermocouples whose configuration exploits small temperature differences occurring naturally in the application environment. Internal power management electronics prioritize the use of renewable energy first and an optional back-up battery second; the load will see no discernable difference between the two power sources. The system is self-recharging and provides >10 yr. operating life when exposed to temperature differences.
