SMSC Introduces High-Speed, Single-Wire SST Sensors

HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. /BUSINESS WIRE/ -- SMSC introduced a set of temperature-sensing devices, the EMC1102 and EMC1152, that are compliant with Intel's new high-speed, single-wire simple serial transport (SST) bus.

Both devices employ beta compensation, which is a new technology used to accurately measure temperature from a 65 nm processor. Beta compensation technology adjusts for inconsistent behavior typically seen in substrate diodes at 65 nm and in advanced processor geometries. In addition, the EMC1102 and EMC1152 are extremely accurate, with both ambient and external temperature accuracy rates of ±1°C. Each device is a dual-temperature sensor, but the EMC1152 also measures five supply voltages in desktop PCs, allowing it to monitor supply voltage rails on the motherboard.

"We are pleased that, in alignment with the introduction of our Intel 965 Express Chipset Family, SMSC has engineered and delivered a series of new SST-compatible sensors to meet the needs of innovative platforms throughout the PC industry," said Steve R. Peterson, director of chipset and software marketing at Intel.

"At SMSC, our goal is to understand the needs of our customers and to rapidly develop solutions that not only meet those needs but offer a competitive advantage," said Mark Beadle, director of marketing—environmental monitoring and control products at SMSC. "In this case, helping our customers quickly implement the Intel 2006 desktop architecture by providing SST-compliant devices was bolstered by our use of proprietary technology that boosts temperature sensing accuracy at advanced processor nodes."
