“Smart Bandage” Project Warns of Imminent Stress Fractures

(Midwestbusiness.com) - With the help of a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Army Medical Research & Materiel Command, researchers at Purdue University and the University of Toledo have developed a high-tech bandage that uses sound waves to warn athletes, elders, and others of potential stress fractures, which often take a month to develop.

Piezoceramic sensors detect tiny variations in sound waves that might suggest a crack forming in a bone. The sensors transmit the data to a monitor worn on an individual's belt, and an alarm warns the athlete to stop before a major injury occurs.
