Single-Chip Delivers Display Power & LED Drive In Smartphones

The ISL98611 is reportedly the first such power management IC to integrate display power and backlight LED driver functions in a single chip. It significantly improves efficiency of both functions to increase smartphone battery life by an hour or more. As a result, the device extends battery life, enables better display uniformity, and improves color consistency. It powers two or three strings of backlight LEDs with up to 93% efficiency, generates ±5V display power supplies with 88% efficiency at 15-mA load, and provides analog, PWM, and hybrid dimming. Available in a 2.33 x 2.61 mm2, 30-ball WLCSP, pricing for the ISL98611 is $1.50 each/1,000. An evaluation board is available for $100 each.
