Sensor System Enables 3D Depth Perception

The SP1 stereo vision system is described as a novel sensor solution for 3D depth perception that makes use of passive stereo vision. Basically,  depth is estimated solely by comparing images recorded by two cameras at different viewing positions. This approach is said to be less affected by lighting conditions and is able to provide dense 3D sensory information. Because only a single exposure is required for stereo vision, it is also suitable for observing moving objects.

The SP1 connects to two industrial cameras, whose placement and optics are controlled by the user. This allows the system to be configured for covering very different measurement volumes. Should the requirements change, it is sufficient to just reposition the cameras or change the lenses. After a short re-calibration, the system is able to provide accurate depth measurements again.
