In these nervous times, those who watch over our borders and ports want to keep an eye not only on who but also on what is trying to enter the country. Containerized cargo is of particular concern; these huge crates could conceal dangerous products (or persons), but opening each container for inspection is impractical. Avery Dennison and RF Code Inc. (Mesa, AZ) have jointly developed Secure Strap, a device that will let the container itself reveal any suspicious behavior it has encountered during its travels. Secure Strap consists of a radio lock (an active RFID real-time locating unit) attached to a fiber-optic tamper sensor cable. Tags on the strap use electronic seal technology for tamper monitoring, container tracking and location verification, and other information. If the cable is compromised in any manner, Secure Strap will send out a radio distress signal indicating its identification code and a tamper indication signal. An encrypted reset key allows reuse of the radio lock component of the system. The system is currently being used in Operation Safe Commerce, and is suitable for vertical markets such as transportation, logistics, security, and manufacturing.
