Renishaw to Purchase AHS Magnetic Sensors

A semiconductor device company that has developed and produced a range of ultra-high-sensitivity magnetic field sensors has secured a major contract to supply its technology to Renishaw plc.

Liverpool-based Advanced Hall Sensors Ltd. (AHS) is a technological leader in the design, manufacture, and testing of high-performance noncontact magnetic sensors (Hall sensors), which are used in a wide range of industry sectors.

These devices can be used in robotic systems on production platforms, where accurate and repeatable position sensing is required. Other application areas include current measurement, motor speed control, magnetic flux leakage detection on oil and gas pipeline inspection tools, and magnetic spatial imaging. AHS has now secured a significant order to supply Renishaw plc. with high-sensitivity Hall sensor elements to be used in the development of magnetic sensing devices in their advanced metrology products.

AHS was founded as a spin-out company from the University of Manchester and is run by Managing Director, Dr. Brian Miller and his co-directors Professor Mohamed Missous and Mr. John Yates. The company received two rounds of funding from Alliance Fund Managers through the Merseyside Investment Fund, most recently to address and accelerate commercialization of their product range.

Brian Miller commented: "Although there are other Hall sensor elements widely available, the AHS devices have impressive performance advantages, including higher sensitivity, lower power consumption, and stability over a wide range of temperatures. These characteristics are becoming increasingly important as new applications emerge in ever more demanding environments, where there may be large variations in temperature, where greater accuracy or detectivity is required, and in remote battery-operated systems, where power consumption factors are of paramount importance. This is very clearly evidenced by the way our company is attracting such diverse enquiries from around the world. We are delighted that a company of the stature of Renishaw has selected our product on this occasion."
