ProTek Devices Debuts ESD Protection Diode for Automotive CAN Bus Lines

TEMPE, AZ -- ProTek Devices has introduced a new electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection diode designed for circuit protection in automotive controller area network (CAN) bus lines and other automotive applications. The PESD1CAN is able to provide ESD circuit protection of greater than 25 kilovolts for a CAN_HI and CAN_LO bus line. It also provides overvoltage circuit protection against other electrical fast transients (EFT).

The PESD1CAN has a rated stand-off voltage of 24 volts, minimum breakdown voltage of 25.4 volts, and maximum clamping voltage of 70 volts. The new diode is compatible with various IEC standards that include 61000-4-2 (ESD): air 15kV, contact 8kV; 61000-4-4 (EFT): 40A, 5/50ns; and 61000-4-5 (surge): 3A, 8/20 micro seconds. The PESD1CAN features 200 watts peak pulse power per line for a typical 8/20 micro second waveshape. It also boasts a low clamping voltage, low capacitance and low leakage current of 0.05 microamperes. The PESD1CAN is also RoHS and REACH compliant.

It is provided in a molded JEDEC SOT-23 package with an approximate weight of only eight milligrams. It has lead-free pure-tin plating (annealed) and a solder reflow temperature (pure-tin - Sn, 100) of 260-270 degrees Celsius. The flammability rating is UL 94V-0.

Pricing and Availability

ProTek Devices' PESD1CAN ESD circuit protection diode is now available in mass quantities. Pricing starts at around $0.10 per part in minimum quantities of 3,000 units. It's available in 8mm tape and reel, per EIA standard 481. A data sheet for the PESD1CAN can be download from the ProTek Devices website.
