The Flexible Force Sensor (FFS) from Diversified Technical Systems (DTS) Inc., Seal Beach, CA, is a 0.208 mm thick plug-n-play sensor that can measure the force between virtually any two surfaces. The sensor converts nonlinear resistance changes to a linear output voltage proportional to force. The active sensing area is 9.5 mm dia., standard force range is 440 N (100 lb.), optional force range is up to 4400 N (1000 lb.), and the sensor has built-in EMI, RFI, and ESD protection. A circuit module amplifies and linearizes the output. Applications include aerospace analysis, amusement ride testing, automotive safety, biomechanics, blast testing, embedded monitoring, impact testing, injury investigation, and sports and safety equipment.
