The netIC from Hilscher North America Inc., Lisle, IL, is a network interface module that fits into a standard 32-pin DIL socket. It is available in versions that provide network slave connectivity for EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, Profinet, EtherCAT, PowerLink, SERCOS III, and CANopen. For Ethernet protocols with integrated switch or hub functions the netIC has these features built-in, including 2 Ethernet transceivers. The device exchanges data with the host controller via serial communications using Modbus RTU. You can also replace the Modbus RTU protocol with a custom or proprietary protocol using the netIC's gateway task. Optionally, it can communicate via its SPI or I2C interfaces. An evaluation board is available.
