mPhase Offers Smart NanoBattery Design

LITTLE FALLS, NJ--(Marketwire) - mPhase Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: XDSL), and its wholly owned subsidiary AlwaysReady, Inc., announced that development of the Smart NanoBattery with a mechanical activation mechanism is expected to position the company competitively against conventional battery manufacturers, and holds potential to capture significant market share. The mechanically activated Smart NanoBattery providing power on command will offer greater user control and power management compared to standard batteries, a significant advantage in various portable electronics markets such as emergency devices and sensor networks.

The Smart NanoBattery's manual activation architecture consists of an internal breakable barrier which separates the liquid electrolyte from the battery's electrodes. As long as the barrier is intact, the chemicals do not mix and the battery is inactive, therefore preserving all potential energy without any discharge or leakage. In this state, the battery can sit in storage for decades without notable decline in potential energy. This is critical for certain applications such as emergency lights, medical alerts, alarms, or beacons. In case of emergency, such devices must work completely and reliably at the moment they are needed. When the user wishes to use the emergency device, he would manually break the internal barrier separating the battery's chemicals. This could be accomplished by pressing a button or sliding a switch, for example. Upon breakage of the barrier, the electrolyte contacts the electrodes, initiating the chemical reaction that provides power to the emergency device. The device would then activate at full power.

In addition to emergency devices, other mechanical activation methods and related applications of the Smart NanoBattery are currently being considered. One example could be to initiate battery activation by dropping an appropriately designed device from some significant height, such as dropping a fleet of sensors from an airplane. Battery activation would begin upon impact. An application such as this could be used in agricultural or military arenas. Dispersing multiple devices would be quick, safe, and efficient, and devices could be stored for long periods without compromising power.
