Wearable electronics are a major market in both the consumer and healthcare arenas, however, on the healthcare side, more applications are coming of age in the serious medical theater. This includes critical condition monitors patients are wearing that can communicate directly with physicians and healthcare professionals, to both keep tabs on a patient’s condition as well as alerting to serious events that require immediate attention. Existing devices and those being created are no longer specialty items, and are going mainstream at a rapid pace.
Consumer items abound, most widely known being those offered by Fitbit. For general fitness applications such as exercise, routine health parameter monitoring, general diet, etc., consumer devices are serviceable. They are somewhat accurate and are in no way expected to be used, or even specified for critical healthcare applications.
