Maxim Unleashes The Industry’s Smallest Ambient Light Sensor

Maxim Integrated Products

According to its maker, the MAXREFDES23, also dubbed Santa Cruz, is the industry’s smallest ambient light sensor (ALS) integrating the IO-Link protocol. The sensor fits on a printed circuit board measuring a mere 6.5 mm x 25 mm.

The MAXREFDES23 rides on a PCB measuring 6.5 mm x 25 mm.

The purpose integrating the IO-Link protocol is to simplify high-accuracy industrial sensing. Using the Santa Cruz ALS, factory personnel can quickly configure and monitor multiple red, green, blue (RGB) and infrared (IR) ambient light sensors.

Integration does not stop with the IO-Link and software. Santa Cruz packs six accurate clear light, RGB and IR sensors, a temperature sensor, an ultra-low-power microcontroller, dual integrated 3.3V and 5V linear regulators, and programmable flash memory.

Additionally, the device is sensitive over a range of 57,542 lux to 0.001 lux at low power. The Santa Cruz system is available on the aforementioned 6.5 mm x 25 mm PCB with an M12 connector. Pricing starts at $99 each. For more details, go to http://www.maximintegrated.com/datasheet/index.mvp/id/8339
