LED Driver Delivers Enhanced Lighting Effects

STMicroelectronics’ LED1202 12-channel LED driver enables smooth and natural interactions with smart-home devices, wearable electronics, and small appliances.

The component can store eight programmable patterns and sequences and operate independently of the main controller, enabling the host system to save power while lighting effects run continuously. Its 12-bit internal PWM dimming enables precision control of programmed sequences and the main controller can set 8-bit values for analog dimming via the driver’s I2C interface. Minimal external components are required to complete the driver circuit.

Fierce AI Week

Register today for Fierce AI Week - a free virtual event | August 10-12

Advances in AI and Machine Learning are adding an unprecedented level of intelligence to everything through capabilities such as speech processing and image & facial recognition. An essential event for design engineers and AI professionals, Engineering AI sessions during Fierce AI Week explore some of the most innovative real-world applications today, the technological advances that are accelerating adoption of AI and Machine Learning, and what the future holds for this game-changing technology.

With 12 output channels, a single LED1202 can drive four RGB LEDs at 20 mA per channel. A synchronization feature allows connecting to eight LED1202 drivers to control larger LED arrays. In addition, low-current channel matching, within 2% (typical) at 2.5 mA is said to enhance color consistency. Phase shifting between channels minimizes current ripple and prevents excessive peak demand. Safety features include open-LED detection, over-temperature protection, and a fault-flag pin.

Available now, the LED1202JR in a 1.71 mm x 2.16 mm WLCSP-20 flip-chip is $0.90 each/1,000 and the LED1202QTR in a 3 mm x 3 mm VFQFPN-20 is $1.15 each/1,000. The STEVAL-LLL007V1 evaluation kit is also available. For deeper knowledge, procure and peruse the LED1202JR datasheet.
