Image Sensor Enables Safer Digital Radiography

Since its first use by medical professionals, x-ray machines have always posed risks for both the patient and technician due to overexposure to radiation. In some cases, sensitive individuals have developed various forms of cancer due to repeated use of diagnostic x-rays.

Today the risks are far less than the early days. Lower-power systems, effective shielding, and prescreening have made getting any form of radiology much safer.  However, some risks still exist, even if just for a sensitive few and, overall, you cannot be too safe. Enter the KAF-09001 image sensor from ON Semiconductor.

Promising to enhance patient safety in digital radiography applications, the KAF-09001 CCD image sensor enables video imaging under reduced x-ray dosage conditions. The device delivers the same imaging performance as its forerunner, the KAF-09000, while integrating an output architecture that supports a high sensitivity video mode. This facilitates patient positioning while minimizing overall x-ray exposure.

Specifications include a resolution of 9 Mpixels, quad-output design supporting readout speeds up to 20 MHz for a 10x increase in the full resolution frame rate, and a video preview at rates up to 10 fps when the device is operating with 3 x 3 binning. Herb Erhardt, Vice President and General Manager, Industrial Solutions Division, Image Sensor Group at ON Semiconductor informs, “The KAF-09001 allows digital radiography systems to provide increased functionality without sacrificing sensitivity or cost.”

The KAF-09001 is available in standard and engineering grades in a RoHS-compliant CERDIP-60 package with an integrated CuW cooling plate. Additionally, it is available with monochrome spectral sensitivity in both sealed and taped glass configurations. For more information:
