Hillcrest Labs Brings Advanced Motion Control to Oppo Mobile Devices

Rockville, MD –Hillcrest Labs announced that Oppo, a leading Chinese CE manufacturer and smartphone OEM, is using Hillcrest’s patented Freespace software to provide advanced motion-based functionality on their latest smartphones. Specifically, Hillcrest’s Freespace MotionElements software will enable intuitive gesture recognition to simplify the user experience for smartphone users. Additional details, such as smartphone models or pricing, were not disclosed.

“Advanced motion control technology is becoming an essential feature for today’s mobile devices,” said Chad Lucien, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Hillcrest Labs. “With Freespace, Oppo smartphone users will be able to quickly and intuitively control their smartphones with precise gesture recognition, powered by Hillcrest’s patented motion software.”

“We’re excited to bring to market new and innovative mobile devices that take advantage of Hillcrest’s proven, high-precision motion technology,” said Haijun Yu, Chief Experience Officer, Oppo. “Enhanced user experiences are the foundation of Oppo’s commercial success worldwide. Together with Hillcrest, we look forward to simplifying consumers’ lives with even more efficient and intuitive mobile capabilities.”

Gesture controls are one of many advanced features enabled by Hillcrest’s Freespace technology. These features can take the form of ‘symbol gestures’ such as drawing a letter or number in the air, or event gestures such as shakes and twists of the device. Gestures can be used when the user is unable to interact with the touchscreen, or as shortcuts where a single gesture can bypass several screen taps and button presses for commonly used functionality. Freespace enables the most accurate and consistent gesture recognition in the industry.

Hillcrest’s Freespace technology enables gestures, context awareness and other advanced functionality while working consistently with a variety of sensor suppliers and platforms. Freespace enables OEMs to maintain low costs and minimize battery usage in smartphones, tablets, and other consumer electronic devices.

Companies that have licensed Hillcrest’s Freespace technology for use in their products include: Atmel, Hisense, Intel, LG Electronics, Roku, SMK Electronics, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., TCL Multimedia, Universal Electronics (UEI), and more. Hillcrest has a worldwide intellectual property portfolio that includes over 100 granted and 200 filed patents.
