High-Precision Sensing Platform For Portable Apps

CAMARILLO, CA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq:SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, announced the SX8723, an ultra-small data acquisition device that uses the company's ZoomingADC signal amplification circuitry to lower the cost of implementing portable sensing systems by allowing manufacturers to use lower-cost sensors without sacrificing accuracy.

The SX8723 is a data acquisition device that converts analog sensor data into a digital signal for processing and is capable of direct connections with a wide array of pressure, chemical or magnetic sensors making it one of the most versatile data acquisition devices available on the market. The device is designed to operate off of a single Li-ion battery without loss of its 16-bit precision, even with a depleted battery.

The device features Semtech's ZoomingADC, a 10-bit preamplifier for the ADC that allows the device to "zoom in" (with a programmable gain from 0.1 to 1000) on a small portion of the analog signal and apply the full 16-bit ADC to only that part of the signal. The preamplifier delivers the highest gain on the market and has a unique offset control mechanism, giving designers the freedom to achieve a given level of sensitivity using lower cost sensors.

The SX8723 features two differential inputs or four single-ended inputs and two digital I/Os to interface directly with up to four sensors that can be a mix of pressure, magnetic and chemical, making the device truly a "sensing platform" that can be deployed across a manufacturer's complete range of sensors.

"With an ability to directly read most Wheatstone bridge sensors and with flexible signal input, the SX8723 is the industry's most versatile ADC," said Michel Chevroulet, Sensing Product Group Manager for Semtech's Wireless and Sensing Products Business Unit. "The focused amplification of our ZoomingADC technology and the flexibility of the two general purpose I/O lines allow customers to further drive down the cost of their systems through the use low-cost sensors."

The SX8723 joins the SX8724, which has three differential inputs and four parallel I/Os, as the smallest data acquisition devices in Semtech's sensing machines product platform, making it possible to embed it directly inside the sensor enclosure. It is available in a 4x4 mm MLPD12 leadless 12-pin package that can be soldered with regular SMD soldering process. The SX8723 is RoHS and WEEE compliant. The SX8724 is the winner of a 2007 Product of the Year Award for most innovative ADC given by EN-Genius.net, a leading technology news Website for electronic design engineers.
