SAN JOSE, CA /BUSINESS WIRE/ -- Crossbow Technology Inc., a leading supplier of wireless sensor ("Mote") technology and inertial MEMS sensors for navigation and control, announced the formation of its wireless sensor business unit. The wireless sensor business unit is focused on commercializing the company's wireless technology popularly known as "Motes" for environmental monitoring, asset management, and physical security applications. The wireless business unit will be led by a former Intel executive, Michael Dierks, who joins Crossbow in the newly created role of Chief Operating Officer at Crossbow.
"It is exciting to be joining a company with the quality of people and technology enjoyed by Crossbow," said Mr. Dierks. "The market for wireless sensors is approaching an important growth phase, and Crossbow is leading that effort. It is also personally rewarding to help grow a technology that may improve the way we live—through resource conservation, failure prediction, threat detection, and other means."
As Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Dierks will oversee the wireless sensor business unit, corporate development, and Crossbow's international expansion, which currently includes operations in Europe, China, and Japan. Mr. Dierks was previously a Director, Strategic Investments, at Intel Capital, where he developed and led Intel's investment strategy in the areas of MEMS, nanotechnology, and RFID, and more recently Intel's renewed focus on consumer Internet. Some of Mr. Dierks' investments include Iridigm (acquired by Qualcomm), Nanosys, RF Code, Six Apart, and Crossbow. Prior to his eight years at Intel, Mr. Dierks practiced law and helped launch the intellectual property practice of Shearman & Sterling in New York City. Mike holds a JD with honors from Harvard Law School and a BSE with honors in electrical engineering and computer science from Duke University.
"Crossbow has been at the forefront of new sensor technology for the past 10 years. Crossbow's wireless sensor networking platform commonly known as 'Motes' has been an extremely exciting new sensor technology, and we are proud to announce the formation of an official wireless sensor business unit today," said Mike Horton, President and CEO of Crossbow Technology.
