The SUR500 silicon avalanche photodiode from Laser Components USA Inc., Hudson, NH, is for use in biomedical applications that involve the detection of the smallest signals in the shortwave UV/blue spectral range. At 400 nm, the detector has a noise equivalent power (NEP) of 9 fW/√Hz typical at a sensitivity of ~28 A/W. The photodiode can also be used for measurements in the 255–1000 nm range and is currently available with a 500 µm active dia. Applications include photometry, analytical systems, and fluorescence measurements.
