Augusta Systems Awarded U.S. Navy Contract

MORGANTOWN, WV /PRNewswire/ -- Naval port and river security operations are expected to improve as a result of an intelligent, panoramic imaging system under development by Augusta Systems Inc. The company, provider of intelligent enterprise network technologies, has been awarded a $776,000 contract from the U.S. Navy's Office of Naval Research for the intelligent imaging system, built with the company's platform technologies.

"This intelligent, panoramic imaging system features greater capabilities than the usual surveillance system, resulting in better protection for military facilities and assets," said Patrick Esposito, President and Chief Operating Officer of Augusta Systems. "Thanks to Augusta Systems intelligent network technologies, the system can capture panoramic images, process the data in the field intelligently, and communicate critical security information to military decision makers, as needed."

The intelligent, system—built on Augusta Systems technologies—is designed for use at fixed points or installed on unmanned vehicles. Relying on panoramic imaging technologies from partner EyeSee360 Inc., the system can provide 360° images from a single location—eliminating the need for multiple cameras—and instantly process and wirelessly communicate the imaging information across military networks.

The intelligent system also features data fusion and change-detection capabilities, meaning that algorithms installed on the system enable it to detect changes in multiple images of the same scene taken at different times, and transmit only relevant images back to naval personnel. This capability eliminates the need to transmit and analyze large quantities of raw imagery data, thus conserving network bandwidth and saving time for military personnel.

The Augusta Systems technologies that power the system are SensorBridge, EdgeFrontier, and SensorPort. SensorBridge is an award-winning suite of Microsoft Visual Studio software components for building and managing intelligent networks, systems, and applications—featuring data from edge assets—within an integrated development environment. EdgeFrontier is middleware for intelligent networks. SensorPort is a reconfigurable network appliance for distributed, intelligent processing at the edge of the network.

"The U.S. Navy requires the most efficient and effective information acquisition technologies," said Esposito. "The panoramic imaging system, built on technologies from Augusta Systems and its partners, creates new opportunities for enhanced surveillance within a networked environment. Whether installed at a facility or onboard an unmanned vehicle, the system enables access to critical, intelligently processed imagery data. By using Augusta Systems technologies, the Navy is improving naval information acquisition capabilities and enhancing military operations, such as port and river security."

Augusta Systems was awarded an initial $1 million contract for the effort last year. The new contract will enable the continued development of the system. Subcontractors and system component providers include EyeSee360 Inc. and California University of Pennsylvania, among others.
