Atos Origin, GlobeRanger Launch of RFID Track and Trace

PARIS & RICHARDSON, TX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Atos Origin, the leading global management consulting and IT services firm specializing in business and technology integration, and GlobeRanger, provider of the industry-leading iMotion software platform for RFID, mobility and sensor-based solutions, announced the successful launch of a real-time forensic tracking and tracing system for the Dutch Forensic Institute (NFI). The system tracks and traces the exact time, location, and movement of item-level criminal evidence during forensic analysis and processing at NFI.

The NFI track and trace initiative was formulated in close cooperation between the Public Prosecution Service (OM), the police, and NFI. Motivated by the Schiedam Park murder case report, key government standards were established requiring all pieces of criminal evidence (SVOs) to be traceable and identifiable. SVOs are items of evidence and traces collected by police at crime scenes, and sent to NFI for forensic analysis. Each year NFI receives and tags approximately 100,000 SVOs, resulting in over 800,000 process events being generated and stored.

Atos Origin's implementation of GlobeRanger's iMotion solution for NFI, applies RFID technology to capture time and location data of criminal evidence traveling on trolleys or trays being carried manually by employees. By equipping 50 doors with RFID readers and antennas, NFI instantly tracks and logs the exact movement of evidence, updates their central information system, and makes this information immediately available for on-line viewing and actionable responses. iMotion identifies any deviations from planned evidence movement processes as violations and immediately triggers audible and visible alarms. "The investigation of crime scene evidence at NFI consists of different steps and often involves various research areas. As a result, the 100,000 SVOs received undergo complex logistical movements through the organization," said Johan Klunder, Project Manager at Atos Origin. "By using the Track & Trace system, authorities know instantly the status of a SVO, and where the evidence has traveled over the last 24 hours. This is critical to on-going criminal investigations."

"As a condition of assisting NFI in meeting this government compliance regulation to improve the investigation and prosecution of crimes, Atos Origin is pleased to have participated in this critical effort to ensure public safety," said Alexander de Wilde, RFID Competence Manager at Atos Origin. "This system helps NFI ensure the high integrity of the crime scene evidence, thereby supporting law enforcement agencies in a timely manner."

"GlobeRanger is proud to have partnered with Atos Origin in the successful rollout of the RFID track and trace solution at NFI," said Michael Bigbee, Senior Vice President at GlobeRanger. "This demonstrates iMotion's capability to easily and successfully create new processes resulting in real-time track and trace of vital criminal crime evidence, and assisting NFI in achieving full control of chain-of-custody documentation for criminal evidence."
