Android App Tests Smartphone Audio Quality

Audio Precision’s Android app for testing smartphone audio quality acts as an interface between the Android device and one of the company’s APx audio analyzers. The app allows automated profiling of phones and tablets for network carriers, repair/refurbishment centers, and users needing to evaluate audio performance of different models and manufacturers against a standard. It can route audio through various analog signal paths not normally allowed by the stock Android OS, i.e., making a closed-loop test from analyzer to analog line-in to device’s speaker and back to analyzer. The app employs a device’s record feature and transfers the resulting file to an APx audio analyzer over USB. Other features include the ability to test Bluetooth signal paths including the playback of stimulus waveforms over Bluetooth Handsfree Profile (HFP) without initiating a phone call over the network. Requiring Android version 4.0 and higher and a connected APx audio analyzer to function, the APx Smartphone app is available for download at http://www.ap.com website at no charge as part of Technote 120.
