16-Channel LED Backlight Controller Improves Picture, Saves Power

The AS3824 16-channel LED TV backlight controller performs local dimming of sections of a display screen to provide both improved picture quality and power savings from to 20% to 30%. Intended for use in the latest HD and UHD, or 4K, televisions as well as HDR displays, the device includes a fully flexible 12-bit PWM generator for each of its 16 channels to enable sections of a display screen to be dimmed independently. Each PWM generator may be synchronized with an external synchronization signal. Other features include a 10-bit DAC providing ±0.5%-accurate global control of the current through external MOSFETs or bipolar transistors and support for all LED backlight topologies with no limit on the current through or voltage across the LEDs.
